La Seo or Cathedral of Salvador
Add to my travelBuilt on the city's old mosque, it is an extraordinary compendium of seven centuries of art history, from the 12th to the 18th. In the inner and outer parts of the Cathedral of El Salvador, magnificent displays of Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical art stand out.
In the inner and outer parts of the Cathedral of El Salvador, magnificent displays of Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical art stand out. It was the place where oath of Fueros (Aragon’s Laws) was assumed and head of the Crown of Aragon.
The oldest remains can be seen in the area of the Romanesque head-part, dating back from the twelfth century. On the Romanesque ashlars and beautiful brick walls, a grand temple of five naves with starry vaults is erected.
Its historical and artistic importance is reflected in its architecture, decoration and the participation of great artists from different eras, in addition to the relevant historical events that have taken place there.
The wonderful Mudejar wall of the parish chapel of San Miguel archangel will probably make you hold your breath. And so will its 17th-century baroque tower and the main facade of neoclassical style. Inside, take a glance at the Gothic main altarpiece, made of polychrome alabaster.
The Seo de Zaragoza was included in the declaration of World Heritage that UNESCO granted to the Mudejar of Aragon in 2001.
Its Tapestry Museum, located inside the temple, exhibits one of the best collections in the world of Flemish tapestries from the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, woven in the famous European workshops of Arras, Tournai and Brussels.
